Alexandra Mawby is currently experimenting with collaged drawings, placing her children within imagined landscapes to explore the themes of motherhood, childhood and the everyday. The autobiographical element to these drawings form a narrative on the relationship between the artist and her children, expressing the anxiety experienced as a parent and the documentation of growing children.

The artist uses fragments of photographs and photocopies of places, objects and general detritus found in her everyday within the drawings to create layered and cluttered images, forcing the viewer to sift through the chaos.

The process of drawing is important to the artist’s practice because it requires a slowing down, an opportunity to step out of the regime of life and reconnect with the environment and those around her and notes the parallel between drawing and mindfulness; they are both acts of seeing, noticing and listening.

Alexandra Mawby lives and works in Northamptonshire, UK.
